Q. How can I lower my risk for having a stroke?

A. Here are the guidelines to help you learn how you may be able to lower your risk for a first stroke (adapted from the National Stroke Association):

  1. Know your blood pressure.
  2. Find out if you have atrial fibrillation.
  3. If you smoke, stop.
  4. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
  5. Find out if you have a high cholesterol level.
  6. If you have diabetes, follow your doctor's advice to control it.
  7. Exercise on a regular basis.
  8. Enjoy a lower-sodium (salt), lowerfat diet.
  9. Find out if you have circulation problems.
  10. Know the symptoms of stroke.
